NDIS

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has revolutionised the way disability services are delivered in Australia.

The NDIS has empowered people living with disability by guiding them to establish goals in their life, and identifying the supports required to achieve those goals. The NDIS also allows participants to choose their own service provider and decide how and when they want to receive their supports.

This means that you as a client have control over your funding breakdown. For example, some months you may spend more on transport and other months you may require more support worker shifts.

Jeff’s vision for Give a Care is to ensure every dollar of funding is spent on you the client, and you feel valued by your provider. We are a social enterprise, the goal of which is to ensure people living with disability can maximise their NDIS funding.

NDIS Key Words

Permanent and significant disability

A permanent disability means your disability is likely to be lifelong. A significant disability has a substantial impact on your ability to complete everyday activities.

Supports and services

Assistance or products that help a person in their daily life and help them participate in the community and reach their goals.

Early intervention

Providing support to a person, either a child or an adult, as early as possible to reduce the impacts of disability or developmental delay and to build their skills and independence.

How does the NDIS Work?

If you meet the eligibility criteria for the NDIS, you must apply for NDIS Access through the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). If you are eligible, you will be granted NDIS Access and the NDIA will arrange a planning meeting with you to help understand your goals and circumstances, which will determine your funding plan.

Creating your plan

Your plan is a written agreement the NDIS has worked out with you. Everyone’s plan is different. You will attend a planning meeting with a NDIS representative, where you will be asked questions about how you are going in different areas of your life, what goals you would like to achieve and what kind of help and support you need. Based on this, you will receive a plan that has been developed to provide the right support for you.

Using your plan

Once you have your plan, you will need to understand different budgets, who can assist you in using your plan, and how your plan is managed.

Reviewing your plan and goals

Your plan review is the opportunity for your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to check your supports are working for you, and helping you progress and achieve your goals.
